FOAMING IN BOILER
Formation of the layer of froth or stable foam on the surface of the water is called Foaming.
Causes:
1. High concentration of solids in boiler water
2. Various chemicals present in boiler water
3. Effect of solids and chemicals on the surface tension of water.
4. Presence of organic substances, oil, fats, greases in water
Effects:
1. Scaling in boiler
2. Corrosion in boiler
3. Reduced efficiency of boiler
4. Reduced heat transfer rate in boiler
PRINENTIVE MESURES:
1. Maintain TDS in boiler water at low levels
2. Use of anti-foaming agents
3. Use of mixtures of surface active agents that modifies surface tension of liquid and remove foam
4. Continuous and intermittent blowdown
5. Check whether boiler chemical added are in excess
6. Detect the source of contamination
