Major Causes of Corrosion in Steam Boiler

Corrosion is a phenomenon in which atmospheric oxygen in the air or water reacts with the metal to form oxides. Corrosion in industrial boilers is a phenomenon in which the oxygen that is dissolved in the water inside the boiler reacts with the metal of the boilers. Ferrous component of the metal reacts with the atmospheric oxygen in the water to undergo oxidation. This oxidation results in the formation of ferrous oxides. Ferrous oxides lead to the formation of cavities and holes in the metal. This gradual formation of cavities and holes in the metal is termed as pitting. Pitting is the main host for the corrosion which ultimately destructs metal and its properties.

Exposure of boiler metal to dissolved gases present in boiler water
Oxygen present in boiler water
Carbon Dioxide present in boiler water
Unbalanced pH of boiler water

What is Mobrey? Mobrey is the name used for the Automatic water level controller , it comes under the category of mountings and fittings of Steam Boiler Assembly . As the name suggests, it is used for maintaining the water level in the Boiler shell. It is mostly used in smoke tube steam boilers not in water tube boilers , as the shell diameter of the former is greater than that of latter irrespective of their running capacities and working pressures. Chimney:- Chimney , as we know, is used to reject the flue gases to the atmosphere, coming from the Steam Boiler during operation. Also, it is a megastructure in Steam Boiler assembly and any discrepancy in its structural and foundation work can cause extremely serious damages, may even lead to casualties or plant shut off till its re-erection.
